Background of the Study
Academic dishonesty, encompassing plagiarism, cheating, and data fabrication, undermines the integrity of higher education. As information becomes increasingly accessible, students face both the opportunity and temptation to misuse it. Information literacy—defined as the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information ethically—has been proposed as a powerful tool for mitigating such dishonest behaviors. When students are properly trained in information literacy, they are more likely to understand the value of original research and the implications of academic misconduct (Nwachukwu & Oladele, 2023). At Imo State University, various efforts have been made to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, particularly through library services. However, there remains a disconnect between students' exposure to information and their ability to ethically manage it. This raises critical questions about the effectiveness of current literacy training in shaping students’ ethical research practices. A robust investigation into this relationship can shed light on how enhancing students’ information competencies could reduce academic dishonesty and foster a culture of integrity.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the presence of information literacy instruction in universities, academic dishonesty remains prevalent among students at Imo State University. This suggests a possible gap between information literacy training and its ethical applications. Without a comprehensive understanding of how to use information responsibly, students may inadvertently or intentionally engage in dishonest practices. Therefore, it is essential to explore whether and how information literacy can be harnessed to combat these academic challenges.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the extent to which students apply information literacy in their academic work.
To determine the relationship between information literacy and academic honesty.
To identify gaps in the current information literacy training that may affect ethical research conduct.
Research Questions
How do students utilize information literacy in academic writing and research?
What is the relationship between students' information literacy skills and their likelihood of engaging in academic dishonesty?
What challenges exist in using information literacy to promote academic integrity?
Significance of the Study
This research is essential for academic institutions aiming to foster a culture of academic integrity. It will help librarians, lecturers, and policymakers understand how information literacy programs can be improved to address ethical challenges in student research. The findings could influence curriculum reforms and the development of targeted interventions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to Imo State University, focusing on undergraduate students’ experiences and perceptions regarding the use of information literacy in avoiding academic misconduct.
